UNDERWOOD WINE LIST Glass/Bottle/TO-GO

Sparkling:

Brut Réserve, Bailly Lapierre, Crémant de Bourgogne 14 / 42 / 28

This bright clean sparkling wine is naturally fermented in this bottle, in the Champagne Method. It comes from rocky soils near St. Bris, in the Cote d'Auxerre near Chablis. It is made of 60% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, 10% Aligoté, and 10% Gamay. The aligoté gives it a citric quality and refreshing acidity. This is a terrific alternative to Champagne.

Brut Rosé, Bailly Lapierre, Crémant de Bourgogne                           14 / 42 / 28

A wine for easy enjoyment par excellence, it possesses a delicious softness free of anything sugary. Entirely fresh and with real finesse, its mousse displays an almost frothy, airy lightness.

Lambrusco, Cleto Chiarli “frizzante” Emilia-Romagna 12 / 36 / 24

Made in a traditional style, the Lambrusco di Sorbara del Fondatore opens to a pale raspberry color with light garnet highlights. This is a fizzy wine with perky effervescence and creamy foam. Wildberry, blanched almond and grilled herb aromas emerge from the bouquet and the mouthfeel is tonic and dry with crisp mineral sharpness on the close. It closes with apple cider-like flavors.

Pétillant-naturel (natural sparkling) is a catch-all term for practically any sparkling wine made in the méthode ancestrale, meaning the wine is bottled before primary fermentation is finished, without the addition of secondary yeasts or sugars. (This is in contrast to méthode champenoise, the method used to make Champagne and other more-common sparkling wines, in which a finished wine undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle with additional yeasts and sugars).

Orange Semi-Sparkling, 2016 Domaine Paleokerisio, Ioannina (500ml) 15 / 27 / 18

This red wine develops the harmonious notes of red fruits so representative of the Loire vineyards. Aromas of strawberries, redcurrants, and cherries "sweeten" the hints of spice and green bell pepper. A wonderful freshness makes this wine delicate and easy to drink.

Sangiovese, 2014 Podere Brizio, Rosso Di Montalcino, Toscana 15 / 45 / 30

The beauty of Rosso di Montalcino is that you’re buying young-vine Brunello that spends less time in wood, and thus emerges fresher and more fruit driven from the bottle than its more expensive big sister. This one is all about bright red cherries, a hint of juniper, red plums, and dusty, chocolaty minerals. Suckling’s on board, saying it “begins in wild strawberry territory with riper, darker cherry notes in the background as well as hints of resin. Full body, fine tannins, and a fruit-forward yet refined finish. Extremely pretty.”

Malbec, Merlot, and Cabernet. Fresh and inviting, with aromas of cherry, mocha, plum, barrel spices, anise, and herb. The fine tannins, soft and generous, wrap around a core of black cherry, mint, pomegranate and coffee flavors.

Tempranillo, 2016 Bodegas Lanzaga, Rioja 10 / 30 / 20

Tempranillo, Graciano & Garnacha. Red fruits floral and herbal. The unoaked 2015 LZ is matured in cement vats for some four to six months before being bottled. It's a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano from their own vineyards and grapes purchased from growers in the village of Lanciego. It fermented in cement vats with indigenous yeasts. I've found the ripe and forward 2015 vintage quite good for young wines, as it has produced juicy reds. This is quite forward, a little raw and young, juicy and fresh. It is terribly tasty with an herbal twist that provides additional freshness.

Merlot Blend, 2010 Château Lafon, Bordeaux   14 / 42 / 28

Rich, complex, it offers a range of floral aromas (violet in a young wine, peony after a few years ), dried fruits (prunes) with delicate shades of undergrowth, toast, and hints of vanilla.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 2016 Beckman, Santa Ynez Valley, CA      16 / 48 / 32

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate from Beckmen is 100% varietal and was brought up in 50% new French oak. Cassis, vanilla bean, hints of mint and bay leaf all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated beauty that has wonderful purity, plenty of tannin and a great finish. Located just outside of Los Olivos, the Beckmen Family has been a cornerstone of the Santa Ynez wine industry since 1994. They pull largely from their estate Purisima Mountain Vineyard (planted in 1996) in Ballard Canyon and the wines are consistently outstanding. In addition, they’re almost always terrific values
